Los Alamitos is one of 72 high schools in California that compete in PCISA (Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Association) regattas ranging down to San Diego and up to Monterey. Everybody sails the same boat called a CFJ (Club Flying Junior), a two-person, two-sail boat.
When first starting, sailors will have the roll of crew, which controls the front sail called the jib. Once they are accustomed to regattas, the water, the rules, and general sailing knowledge they move up to the skipper who controls the main sail and steers the boat. The skipper and crew work together to get the boat as fast as possible and make the correct tactical and strategic decisions. There are two different types of regattas one is called a SoCal and the other is a 10%. SoCal is treated like a Junior Varsity event which means teams may not always send their best skippers & crews which makes it is a great way for new skippers to get experience racing. The 10% regattas is where each team sends their best skippers and crews. Each team which consists of four people per team (2 skippers & 2 crew). Only two people sail at a time per team so they rotate every set (2 races). The team with the lowest combined score wins the regatta. There is lots of fun at the regatta's and many memories made at some of the greatest sailing venues in California.
